Privacy Policy

Village Services ("we," "us") runs a local services marketplace that connects neighbors ("villagers") with independent local service providers, with optional community give-back partnerships. This policy explains what we collect, why, who sees it, and the choices you have.

What we collect

• Account information — name, email address, password (stored by Firebase Authentication, never visible to us), phone number (providers), and profile photo if you add one.
• Location — the town/ZIP you enter and its approximate map coordinates, used to match you with nearby providers, requests, and community posts. We do not track your device's real-time GPS location.
• Service activity — requests you post, proposals, bookings, job history, ratings and reviews, and messages exchanged through the app.
• Community content — posts and comments you share on the Village Board, visible to other signed-in members.
• Payment information — processed entirely by Stripe. Card numbers never touch our servers. We keep transaction records (amounts, dates, parties) for bookkeeping and tax law.
• Provider verification — providers may complete a background check through Checkr. We store the outcome status, not the underlying report contents.
• Device & usage data — basic analytics events (screens used, feature adoption) and a push-notification token if you allow notifications.

How we use it

• Operate the marketplace: match requests with providers, process bookings and payments, deliver notifications.
• Trust & safety: verification, fraud prevention, moderating community content, enforcing our Terms.
• Community give-back: if you joined through a partner organization's code, we track resulting platform fees so the organization receives its donation share.
• Improve the product and communicate with you about your account.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with third parties for their own advertising.

Text messages (SMS)

If you give us your mobile number and agree to be contacted (for example by ticking the consent box on our sign-up page, texting our number, or asking us for a call or a link), we may text you about your Village Services account, a call you requested, a sign-up link you asked for, or to answer a question you sent us. Message frequency varies; message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP at any time to opt out and HELP for help. Mobile phone numbers and SMS consent are never sold, rented, or shared with third parties or affiliates for their marketing purposes. Our texting provider (Twilio) processes messages on our behalf and only to deliver them.

Who sees your information

• Other members — the minimum needed for the marketplace to work: your first name, town, profile photo, reviews, and — once a booking is confirmed — the service address and contact details needed to do the job.
• Service processors — Google Firebase (hosting, database, authentication), Stripe (payments), Checkr (background checks, providers only), and Anthropic (automated moderation of community posts). Each processes data only to provide its service to us.
• Partner organizations — see aggregate counts and donation totals only, never your individual activity.
• Legal — if required by law, or to protect the safety of our members.

Retention & deletion

We keep your data while your account is active. You can delete your account any time in the app (Profile → Delete account) or by following the steps at villageservices.app/delete-account.html. Deletion removes your personal information; reviews and job records involving other people are kept in anonymized form, and payment records are retained as required by tax and financial law (typically 7 years).

Your choices & rights

• Edit your profile information in the app at any time.
• Turn off push notifications in your device settings.
• Unsubscribe from marketing email with one click in any message.
• Reply STOP to any text message to stop receiving texts.
• Email us to request a copy of your data or ask a privacy question.

Children

Village Services is for adults. You must be 18 or older to create an account. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

Security

Data is encrypted in transit and at rest by our infrastructure providers. Access to member data is limited to what operating the service requires. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affects your unencrypted personal information we will notify you as Kentucky law (KRS 365.732) requires.

Changes

If we make material changes we'll update the date above and notify you in the app or by email.
